Segundo a tradição medieval, foi o eremita Paio,alertado por luzes noturnas que se produziam no bosque de Libredão, que descobriu os restos de Santiago Maior e de dois dos seus discípulos.
Lugar de grande misticismo, Santiago ainda apresenta vestigios de suas origens celtas e romanas.

The city's Cathedral is the destination today, as it has been throughout history, of the important 9th century medieval pilgrimage route, the Way of St. James. In 1985 the city's Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site
