Duas Igrejas / Two Churches - Panamá

Duas Igrejas / Two Churches

One of the things you might want to see when you visit Panama is the famous golden altar of the Church of San Jose in Casco Viejo.  Inside is the famous Golden Altar, which is made of carved wood and is covered in gold flake. Commonly known in Spanish as the "Altar de Oro" (Golden Altar), it was originally in a church in "Old Panama." When English pirate Henry Morgan attacked the city the jesuits painted the altar black to hide the gold. The pirates left it alone, thinking it was worthless.

Since the 17th century, Portobelo has been the home of the Cristo Negro de Portobelo - the Black Christ of Portobelo. There are several explanations for the presence of this life size figure of a black Christ in the village. Each story has three parts - the arrival of the statue, the refusal of the statue to leave the village, and its veneration.  All stories agree that it was carved in Spain, arrived on a ship and was washed ashore at Portobelo. The rest is shrouded in the mists of time and myth.

By the Caribbean Coast, we live Fort San Fernando to arrive at the center  of the city and visit Fort San Jerónimo

A small fishing village, Portobelo no longer has the status it had once in the past centuries.
Nevertheless , it is still a place worth visiting it.

The beaches, the forts , the Museum, the people and their handcraft work, the Church of the Black Christ are a must to see.
